The Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania
The Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania was classified as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site on December 17, 1982. It is recognized under Criterion (3) as an exceptional historical witness to the extinct Punic and Roman civilizations, and Criterion (4) for its architectural remains which illustrate various construction methods and traditions of the ancient Maghreb, harmoniously integrated into its natural landscape.
The monument is a royal Numidian mausoleum with a distinct African character, noted for its unique architectural and ideological/doctrinal symbols. It is considered an exceptional funerary monument in North Africa. Historically, the geographer Mela referred to it in his writings (circa 40 AD) as the "Monumentum Commune Regia Gentis." ### Historical Significance
Most researchers attribute the mausoleum to the Numidian period during the reign of King Juba II of Caesarea Mauritania (who reigned from 25 BC to 23 AD) and his wife, Cleopatra Selene II, the daughter of the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra VII. It serves as the common tomb for the royal family and represents a cultural link between indigenous civilizations and the waves of Punic and Roman colonization between the 6th century BC and the 6th century AD.
